Description

Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Physical Therapist (PT) or Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) to work with special education students in a variety of school setting; including the Physical Education (PE) setting. The ideal candidate will be responsible for evaluating, developing, and implementing individualized physical therapy plans to support students with a variety of disabilities in their physical activities within the school setting. This role requires collaboration with special education staff, PE teachers, and other professionals to ensure that students have access to an inclusive, supportive, and safe environment in which they can develop their physical skills and motor abilities. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment & Evaluation:
    Conduct physical therapy evaluations for students with disabilities to determine their individual needs, goals, and physical abilities in relation to PE activities.
  • Individualized Therapy Plans:
    Develop and implement tailored physical therapy plans for students, in collaboration with the PE teacher and special education team. Plans should focus on improving motor skills, strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and endurance.
  • Collaboration with Staff:
    Work closely with PE teachers, special education teachers, and other school professionals to design inclusive PE activities and make necessary adaptations to meet the needs of students with diverse disabilities.
  • Direct Therapy Services:
    Provide direct physical therapy services in individual or small group settings, either within the classroom, gym, or other appropriate spaces.
  • Progress Monitoring:
    Regularly monitor and assess student progress toward physical therapy goals and adjust interventions as needed. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of therapy sessions, goals, and outcomes.
  • Support Inclusion:
    Promote and facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities in all PE activities, ensuring modifications are made to ensure full participation and success.
  • Equipment & Adaptations:
    Assess the need for adaptive equipment or modifications to physical spaces and collaborate with school staff to secure or create necessary adaptations.
  • Parent & Caregiver Communication:
    Communicate with parents, guardians, and caregivers about student progress, goals, and strategies for continued support at home.
  • Professional Development:
    Stay current with best practices, research, and trends in pediatric physical therapy, especially as it relates to students with disabilities and physical education settings.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    Master’s degree or Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from an accredited program, or an associates degree from an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant program. 
  • Licensure:
    Current state licensure as a Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant. Additional certifications in pediatric therapy or special education preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Prior experience working with children or adolescents with disabilities, preferably in a school or educational setting.
    • Experience in adapting physical activities for students with a variety of physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities is strongly preferred.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong knowledge of physical therapy techniques, principles, and therapeutic interventions for students with special needs.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, therapists, and school staff.
    • Patience, flexibility, and a compassionate approach to working with children with disabilities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms to students, families, and team members.
    • Ability to create and modify lesson plans and activities to meet the individual needs of students.

Working Conditions:

  • The position will primarily be based in the school’s PE facilities, gymnasium, or related activity spaces, with some therapy sessions conducted in classrooms or therapy rooms.
  • Physical requirements may include assisting students with mobility or positioning, as well as the ability to engage in physical activities alongside students.
